AN OVERVIEW OF THE COLLEGE BASEBALL ACADEMY'S PROPRIETARY
"OFFER MAGNER METHOD"
At the heart of our ‘Offer Magnet Method’ lies the concept of identifying your ‘unique value.’ This initial step is crucial because the recruitment field is saturated with thousands of players all vying for the same goal. Herein lies your strategic decision: blend in with the 99% and hope to outshine solely on skill and cost, or distinguish yourself by creating a unique brand.
Consider how coaches strategize their teams. They view players as tactical assets, each with a role to play in the overarching game plan. Their aim is to assemble a team with diverse skills, providing them with the flexibility to adapt to various game situations.
Take, for example, a pitcher’s approach to a game. Is it better to throw 50 of your best fastballs, or to mix in 30 fastballs, 20 curveballs, and 10 changeups? The latter approach, offering variety, is often more effective. Despite the fastballs being your strongest pitch, integrating curveballs and changeups can enhance your game’s dynamics. Coaches apply a similar mindset in team selection, valuing players who bring a mix of attributes to the table.
Let’s illustrate this with a practical example. Consider branding the same player in two different ways and see which one likely attracts more attention:
1. Right-handed pitcher (RHP) with an 85mph fastball, standing 6’2”, weighing 220 pounds.
2. Sidearm pitcher with an 85mph sinker.
This specific case study resulted in a 3.6x higher response rate from college coaches using option number 2.
Capturing and maintaining the attention of college coaches is crucial in the recruitment process. Once your unique value piques their interest, the next step is to solidify that interest and transform it into active engagement. The most effective tool for this is a well-crafted skills video. This video should not only confirm the promise of your unique value but exceed expectations, compelling coaches to reach out to you.
Here’s how we recommend structuring your skills video to maximize its impact:
1. Start Strong: Place your most impressive clips at the beginning. Similar to the quick judgments made while scrolling through TikTok or YouTube, coaches are quick to lose interest if the start doesn’t captivate them. Leading with mediocre footage risks losing their attention before they see your best plays.
2. Quality Over Quantity: Your video should exclusively feature your top 5% of clips. While it may be tempting to include longer footage to showcase a range of skills, a concise, high-impact video is more effective. Aim for a duration of 60 to 90 seconds. This brevity ensures that every second of your video is compelling and leaves coaches wanting more. If they are interested in seeing a broader range of your abilities, they will request additional footage.
With your unique value and landing page set, the next step is to strategically target colleges. Rather than picking schools haphazardly, a structured approach increases your chances of success. Begin by addressing three key questions to streamline your selection process:
1. Geographical Preference: Determine the regions where you would like to study. This will narrow down your options to a manageable list of schools in preferred locations.
2. Athletic Division: Decide on the divisions you are interested in, whether it’s Division I, II, III, NAIA, or junior college. This choice should align with your athletic and academic aspirations.
3. Tuition Budget: Establish a clear budget for tuition fees. Knowing your financial limits upfront will help you filter out schools that are beyond your budget.
Answering these questions will yield a list of at least 200 schools, forming your initial pool for consideration. The next phase involves a more detailed evaluation, identifying which of these institutions show a genuine interest in you.
It’s crucial to prioritize schools based on the answers to the above questions before delving into other details. Avoid dismissing potential opportunities for superficial reasons at this early stage. By keeping an open mind and focusing on these three criteria, you maximize your chances of finding the perfect match, ensuring you don’t overlook an ideal school that could have been a missed opportunity.
With your unique value defined and your target schools identified, it’s time to launch a comprehensive recruitment campaign. This involves a mix of social media marketing and personalized outreach to each coach at your chosen schools, with the aim of securing a phone conversation that could lead to a formal offer. This phase is highly competitive, and while we excel in achieving high response rates, success in recruitment is fundamentally a numbers game.
Effective campaigning is about volume and precision. If you’re following best practices in recruitment but not seeing results, the issue is likely the scale of your efforts. By the end of this campaign, you will have a clear understanding of your skill level and the playing tiers that are accessible to you. Often, players are pleasantly surprised to find they attract interest from higher-level programs than they initially thought possible, simply because they reached out widely and assertively.
However, there’s a cautionary tale here: avoid overestimating your abilities. Some players focus too narrowly, targeting only top-tier Division I schools, and then feel disheartened when they receive no responses. This method is about confronting reality head-on — if playing college baseball is your dream, you must be prepared to face the truth about your abilities and potential.
Our approach is thorough and revealing. You might start with offers only from Division III schools, but through this extensive campaign, you could discover that you’re a perfect fit for a Division I team you hadn’t considered. We liken this process to filling a maze with water: we’ll explore every possible path to ensure no opportunity is overlooked, ultimately finding the best fit for your collegiate baseball career.
As the recruitment campaign gains momentum, you’ll start receiving calls from interested coaches. It’s crucial to prepare for these interactions because, ultimately, you are the one who must communicate with them. You’re the player, the voice, and the individual they are considering for their program. Our rigorous selection process ensures that we maintain our track record of securing a minimum of three offers for every player we represent. This underscores the importance we place on effective communication.
Talking to coaches is an art that improves with practice. We strategically begin outreach with smaller programs to hone your conversational skills before progressing to larger ones. There are three key objectives to keep in mind during these calls:
1. Build Rapport: The coach must see you as a likable and relatable individual. Remember, if they offer you a spot, you’ll be part of their team and life for the next four years. Being personable and engaging is crucial; no coach wants to commit to a player who is difficult to interact with or lacks interpersonal skills.
2. Mutual Liking: Just as it’s important for the coach to like you, you need to feel the same way. This relationship will significantly impact your college life. Use these conversations to gauge whether you can see yourself thriving under their guidance.
3. Clarify Next Steps: While engaging conversations are valuable, they must also be purposeful. Ensure each call ends with a clear understanding of the subsequent actions. A strong closing statement can be, “Coach, I really appreciate your time and am excited about the prospect of playing for your school. I feel a great fit here and am even more enthusiastic now. What are the next steps to make this official and move forward?”
This approach ensures that each interaction is meaningful and progresses towards securing your place in the college team.
Once you start receiving offers, the clock begins ticking. Coaches may give you a limited time frame to decide — sometimes a month, a week, or even just 24 hours. It’s vital to be ready to make a swift and informed decision. We advocate for conducting your campaign intensively over a short period, ideally within a week, to accumulate offers simultaneously. This strategy prevents the dilemma of receiving a better offer after committing elsewhere.
When you have multiple offers, you can leverage them against each other to negotiate better terms. For example, if you have three offers of $10,000 each in scholarships, but prefer one school over the others, use this preference as leverage. Approach the other schools, expressing gratitude for their offer but mentioning it’s slightly beyond your financial reach. This might prompt them to increase their offer to secure your commitment.
Let’s say one school increases their scholarship offer to $15,000. Now, you must decide whether the increased financial support outweighs your preference for the original school. If the preferred school can’t match the higher offer, you need to make a choice based on financial practicality and personal preference.
This negotiation process underlines the importance of having multiple offers. It empowers you to secure the best financial package possible, recognizing that college baseball, like any other venture, is fundamentally a business. Effective negotiation can lead to significant scholarship increases, which is substantial over a four-year period.
Ultimately, once you’ve maximized your offer potential, it’s time to commit. This final step involves officially signing with the school and completing the registration process, marking the successful culmination of the Offer Magnet Method. This approach not only ensures you secure the best financial and playing opportunities but also places you in an environment where you can thrive for the next four years.
